Sinopsis:

El filme es narrado por Lemony Snicket,
cuya silueta aparece ocasionalmente escribiendo la historia en una
máquina de escribir en lo que parece el interior de una torre de reloj.
La inventora Violet Baudelaire, su inteligente hermano Klaus y su
hermana bebé de dientes afilados, Sunny, quedan huérfanos luego de que
un misterioso incendio destruyera la casa de sus padres. Son puestos al
cuidado de un gerente bancario, el Sr. Poe, quien los confía a sus
"parientes más cercanos". Sin embargo, malinterpretando la frase, el
Sr. Poe elige el pariente que vive más cerca, el desagradable Conde
Olaf (Jim Carrey). Olaf promete cuidar a los huérfanos "como si ellos
fueran realmente queridos" pero en realidad sólo está interesado en la
enorme fortuna que Violet heredará cuando tenga 18 años. Mientras
tanto, él los trata como esclavos.
